About Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Located on the verdant northern coast of California, Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge spans a mosaic of habitats including tidal salt marshes, mudflats, and uplands. Established in 1971, it provides a crucial stopover for migratory birds traveling along the Pacific Flyway. Visitors can experience the rich biodiversity of the region, with more than 260 bird species having been recorded here. The refuge is especially popular in the fall and spring when visitors can witness large numbers of waterfowl and shorebirds. Apart from bird watching, other recreational activities like hiking and photography allow visitors to engage with the serene landscapes. Humboldt Bay itself is a significant ecological feature, serving as a critical nursery for fish and invertebrates, which in turn support a complex food web. The refuge’s mission also includes education and research, fostering an understanding and appreciation of natural processes and wildlife conservation.
